Autocar is the oldest truck nameplate still in production in the United States—its name synonymous with innovation in truck design for more than a century.

In 1953, White Motor Company purchased Autocar, and introduced off-road vehicles in addition to the truck line. By 1980, Volvo Trucks bought out White, having Autocar continue on as a division. Although the last traditional Autocar ‘custom driver cab’ truck rolled out on December 18, 1987, Autocar continued on under Volvo as they purchased GMC and Renault Trucks—giving Volvo an uncompetitive share of the garbage truck market.

As a result, in 2001, Andrew Taitz purchased Autocar and structured it under Grand Vehicle Works Holdings, as a private subsidiary. Today Autocar offers top-of-the-line refuse trucks, including hybrid models.

Contemporary Activities

Today, Autocar’s manufacturing plant employs 200 workers in Hagerstown, Indiana. The company continues to produce Class 8 trucks, primarily for refuse and waste disposal. Xpeditor, one of the company’s newest models offers features ranging from improved ergonomic cabs, integrated controls, and a new hybrid drive refuse truck. The company’s primary customers are Canadian and American municipalities, plus large and private fleets.
