The Saturn is another car bearing the GM crest that is no longer in production. Developed by General Motors in 1985 as a response to the success of Japanese automobile imports in the United States, Saturn was seen as a separate entity from General Motors in some regards. Saturn had its own manufacturing plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee and was sold through a separate retailer market.

Discussions to create the Saturn brand began in 1983 where it was talked about as a revolutionary small car project. It would be new and exiting – an alternative to the other cars offered by North American dealerships. General Motors went public with the idea in 1983 and the company was officially founded in 1985.

Reaction to the Saturn was varied. Many thought the project was too ambitious because everything about the brand was new. The public responded well though and sales were good although they never met the target the company had hoped for. It may have been a case of bad timing more than anything else as the first Saturn models were released around the same time as the recession hit in 1990.

The division over the Saturn continued within the GM ranks. Saturn took $5 billion from other car projects considering it was really the only GM brand that operated separately GM made some within the ranks uncomfortable.

Despite the tension, Saturn's models did fairly well in terms of sales, but that wasn't enough to save the brand. GM attempted to sell the brand in 2009, but when the successful bid, from Penske Automotive, was withdrawn, the Saturn brand was dropped by GM. All new production was halted in October of 2009 with the full shut down of the Saturn brand expected to be completed by October of 2010.
